Title
Christine Prokopowicz Candy Striper Dress and Shirt
Creation Date
circa 1973
Description
Blue and white striped cotton Candy Striper pinafore that belonged to Christine Prokopowicz, c. 1973. The dress is sleeveless; fastens up the back with six shiny, clear plastic buttons. Just below the front neckline, an "American Red Cross Volunteer" patch is sewn. To the left of the patch is pinned a name badge: "Kris Prokopowicz Volunteer"; Christine preferred a shortened version of her name, but spelled it with a K so as not to use "Chris" which looked like a boy's name. To the right of the patch is a small metal and enamel pin with the Red Cross symbol in red and the word YOUTH in gold lettering on a white background. Christine received this pin for having performed more than 100 hours of volunteer service with the Red Cross. She volunteered at a nursing home in St. Anthony, and got involved with the Red Cross due to the volunteer service requirements she had as a Girl Scout.

The collared dress shirt is white with white buttons, fastening up the front, polyester-cotton blend. The sleeves are about half or elbow length. This was not provided with the pinafore, but was a required part of the uniform.
