Description

This intricately detailed ship was carved with a doctor’s scalpel by member Ruth Palm’s grandfather, Captain Frederik Ernst Funder. Beginning in 1885, Captain Funder carved the model during his free time while serving on a sailing ship. Life as a captain took Captain Funder all over the world, and in Lebanon he conceived of the idea and procured a limb of a tree to begin carving the model ship. The rigging is made of home spun linen. Named after his daughter Amy who was born in 1881, the model was completed in 1888. The model is an exact copy of the ship his father captained, the Danish ship, “Louise Wilhemine.”
