Description

This framed series of 8 photographs depicts the demolition of the Monticello steel bridge as it was removed to make room for a new wider bridge across the Mississippi River. The top left photo, shot from the north river bank, shows the new bridge near completion with several pieces of construction equipment in the river; a cable attached to 2 of them. The other 7 photos depict one large steel bridge section as it falls into the river. The photos are matted in a grid pattern with gray matting. At the center is a 3" x 5" gold title card reading, “Demolition of a Memory 1929-1988”. The photo collection is framed in a wooden frame to match the others in this accession. The back of the frame is covered in a tan paper. There is a hand-written note near the top reading, " Taken by Wm Aydt 1988 During Demolition Last Bridge Segment Pulle It Down". At the bottom left is a small oval sticker reading, “David's Monticello.” There is a hanging system that includes a small steel plate attached with a single screw on either side of the frame. There is a D ring on each steel plate and a 1/8 inch steel cable is strung between the D rings to allow the frame to be hung. On each side of the lower corners are two half-inch rubber buttons that proved wall protection when hung.
