"Willy Carl Bille (17 April 1889 in Frederiksberg – 21 September 1944 in Copenhagen) was a Danish self-taught painter. He was the son of the marine painter Vilhelm Bille and grandson of the marine painter Carl Bille. He painted mainly maritime motifs, still lifes and landscapes – especially scenes from Copenhagen. Willy Bille is buried at Brønshøj Cemetery.
Life
Willy Bille first taught himself to paint. Later became a student of his father Vilhelm Bille and studied as a scholarship holder from 1928 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and in Paris.
Willy Bille's paintings, which were influenced by French impressionism, were shown in numerous exhibitions between 1912 and 1940, including fifteen times at Charlottenborg. They are today in museums and in private ownership - both inside and outside Denmark. In 1925 Willy Bille received the Carlson Prize for a portrait. In 1930 he was given Lis Jacobsen's Honorary Residence near Vejle, Denmark. Carl Vilhelm Bille used the name Willy to avoid confusion with his father Vilhelm Bille and his grandfather Carl Bille – both well-known painters.
As a signature (monogram), Willy Bille used "WB" or "WBille", with the right stroke of W combined with the left stroke of B."
