Minnesota State Flag used at the Pope County Museum. A new state flag design was approved in 2024.
The "old" Minnesota flag, used from 1957 to 2024, featured a royal blue field with a gold fringe and the state seal at its center. The seal itself included a settler plowing a field, a Native American on a horse, and a tree stump with an axe, which together symbolized Minnesota's agriculture, logging, and the westward expansion of settlers at the expense of indigenous peoples. The seal was surrounded by pink and white lady slippers, the state flower, and 19 stars representing Minnesota as the 19th state. The flag's motto, "L'Étoile du Nord" (The Star of the North), was also present.
