Description
This black and white photograph pictures 17 women of the DSS Drill Team. DSS is mostly likely a shortened term for Danish Sisterhood Society. In the 1930s, the
Danish Sisterhood, a fraternal organization for women, was active in Minnesota, including Minneapolis, as part of a larger Danish-American community. While specific Minneapolis activities from the 1930s are not detailed, similar lodges in the state were involved in social, cultural, and mutual aid functions, and the city's history includes a prominent Scandinavian lodge, Society Dania, that was active until the 1930s. This drill team could very well have been part of such a lodge.
