Description
"This is a Hopi wedding basket, 12 1/2 inches in diameter. It is called a plate basket and is woven in natural with maroon, green, blue and yellow used in the design. If you look carefully, you will see that the design resembles a Hopi headdress worn at ceremonies. At a Hopi wedding, these baskets are heaped to spilling over with ground corn, and then as a final act of the ceremony are presented by the bride's parents to the mother of the groom.
Hopi baskets are woven by the women. On all three mesas, where Hopis live, plaited baskets are made, but the second mesa is the only place where they make coiled baskets such as this one. Coiled baskets are made using yucca as a base, with rabbit brush or other materials as a top weaving."

This basket has 2.5 coils and 14 stitches per inch.
