Description
Wooden doll wearing a blue checked and solid red kimono. There is a tan obi with black stripes and a white band in the center around her waist. She has black hair and is wearing a white bonnet. The doll is holding a bunch of what appear to be radishes or turnips. In front of the doll is a green plant and there is a wooden sign in Japanese to her right and a red and yellow flower to her left. She is attached to a wooden platform inside a glass display case.
There is a "Made in Japan" sticker at the bottom of the display case.
This was donated by Mary Beth Grimes of Minneapolis. Mary Beth's aunt, and the doll's owner, was Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Grimes. Betty was born on September 4, 1914 and was a lifelong resident of Minneapolis. Her parents were Gordon and Margaret Grimes and she had a brother named Alden. Betty was employed by Campbell-Mithun, Inc. for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church and was active in many local and national organizations including the Red Cross, United Fund, American Association of University Women and the Woman's Club of Minneapolis. Elizabeth died on August 18, 2006 and is buried at Lakewood cemetery.
