Donahower enlisted in the Union Army on 07 May 1861. He was commissioned as an officer in Company E, Minnesota 2nd Infantry Regiment, on 05 Jul 1861, and promoted to full Captain on 20 Jun 1862. On Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 1863, the Second Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment participated in one of the most dramatic assaults of the Civil War, the Battle of Missionary Ridge. It was the most significant in the history of the regiment. Donahower mustered out on 12 July 1964.
Jeremiah Donahower married Emma Veitch married in Knox County, Illinois, August 15, 1865. The couple is found in Saint Peter on the 1875 census. By 1895, they are living in Saint Paul.
