Description
"Black maiden-hair fern whales, a typical natural figure used by the Neah Bay Indians, are woven into the sides of this basket which is 3 3/4 inches in diameter. on the cover is the swirling symbol of the tribe done in soft red manzanita with purple accents. As are all Neah Bay baskets, this one is started with a base of cedar bark. The body of the basket is woven from mountain grass in a natural color. Other materials used by the Neah Bay Indians are willow root, manzanita and cedar root. "
Makah Baskets. The base of the basket is made of cedar bark and the body of the basket is woven of very fine mountain grass. Popular motifs include the drake duck and the whale, as the Makah are whalers. The black designs are made with maiden hair fern. The other colors in the design are made with dyed grass.

The colors of the basket has faded considerably.
There are 28 rows of 25 stitches per inch.
