Lizzie Cullen's School at Traverse des Sioux, c.1867. Lizzie Cullen and her students were photographed, likely by Hiram Jacoby, in front of the side of the old Nathan Myrick Store. See page 152 of the book "Old Traverse des Sioux" for a copy of this photo, with names. The names in the book are those which are being used to describe this image. Information in square brackets connotes differences or additions, mostly found in William Carey Brown's notes accompanying E6853.
E6853 shows two students whose images have been blotted out of E1311. The space where they had been pictured was painted to resemble the background. The students removed were identified by Brown as Wayne Redfield, first on left, back row, and Bella Teed, back row between Lottie Tyler and Eliza Young. There are no records that can be found relating to a Wayne Redfield, but Warren Henry Redfield, 1851-1918, lived in Kasota and could be the boy pictured.
E6853 shows numbers written on the children and a list by William Carey Brown identifying each child.
Back row, left to right: Frank Pierce, Harry Kennedy, Ed Andrews [W. C. Brown identified this boy as George Andrews, which is correct], Martin Mattice, Amelia Chenevert, Laura Andrews, Miss Lizzie Cullen, Jennie Pettijohn, Lottie Tyler, Emma Pettijohn [in front], Eliza Young, and Eliza Murray.
Middle row, left to right: Carrie Pettijohn, Helen Brown, Tecla [Thecla] Schmahl, Alec Schmahl, Kate Stempel, Rose Scheuer, Amanda [“Mandy”] Young, [W. C. Brown inserted Belle Young], Nellie Pierce, Harriet Meyer [Myers, daughter of Upton “Up” and Sarah Myers], Daisy Kennedy, Mary Chenevert, Susie Pierce, Philomena Coursal, Grace Brown, Lillie Chenevert, Katherine Murray, and Louis Paquin.
Seated, left to right: Norman Mattice, Henry Parsons, Charlie Mattice, George Andrews [Brown identified this boy as Ed Andrews, which is correct], Pete Pierce, Charles Parsons, Frank Sutherland, Pete Scheuer, Charlie Stempel, George Stelzer, and Adam Paquin.
NCHS owns at least five copies of this image: E1311, E6853, E7135, E7409, and one without a catalog number. E1311 is an original print of the photo. The remaining four are not originals. E6853 has a note from William Carey Brown on the back, as well as an attached list of names, some of which are not correctly spelled.
