Brown, William Carey. B/W photo of William Carey Brown. The 1860 Traverse des Sioux census lists W. C. Brown (age 5) as the son of G. A. Brown and his wife, Sue Brown. Two siblings are also listed. W. C. Brown is well described in NCHS records. He was a West Point graduate, who retired as a Brigadier General. In this photo, he is shown as a young man. Brown was born at Traverse des Sioux on December 19th, 1854, the second white child born in Nicollet County. He was graduated from West Point in 1877. Military service took him all over the world. Brown was awarded the Silver Star in1898 and the Distinguished Service Metal upon retirement in 1927. He spent the rest of his life doing historical research and writing, collecting information for historian Thomas Hughes, locating the sketches of Frank B. Mayer, and helping to establish the Nicollet County Historical Society and Museum. William Carey Brown died in 1939.
