Description
"This Neah Bay waste basket contains all the materials native to Neah Bay weavers: willow root, mountain grass, maiden-hair fern, manzanita, cedar root and cedar bark. The decorative grass strip running through it also was woven into it two popular Neah Bay figures: boats and drakes. The bottom of the basket is square and the top, rimmed with scallops, is round. This basket was made for the trade, and when Mrs. Hunter, Neah Bay's finest basket maker, saw it, she said with quite some disgust, "Lazy Woman's basket". When I asked her what she meant, she said that when ever anyone put in the wide strips and didn't weave solidly, they were just trying to avoid work."
