Women in blue kitchen was painted by Thorvald Petersen, who was born in Odense, Denmark July 1, 1899 and died October 29, 1988. Petersen began his training In sculpture under Niels Bang, in Odense in 1915. He later attended the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts sculpture school between 1920-26, with interruptions. He traveled to Germany and Austria in 1922 and 23 then returned to Odense after 1926. He found his motifs in the area around Odense and in Svanninge. In 1936 he took a position as a Drawing teacher at the Technical School, Odense where he first trained, working there until about 1965. Petersen worked for a number of years as a woodcarver specializing in reliefs and carried out restoration work. He exhibited paintings and sculpture in Danish exhibitions from 1928 through 1964. “Woman in Blue Kitchen” was his earliest painting to receive attention, cited in Danish publications of the period. He is known for his use of palette knife and strong brush strokes. The motif of showing a woman seen from the back, facing away from the viewer was first painted by C.W. Eckersberg (1783–1853) and later popularized by Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916).
