Description

”Lauritz  Adolph Hjorth founded L. Hjorth’s Terracottafabrik in Rønne in 1859, establishing one of Denmark's most influential ceramic lineages. Initially producing utility terracotta like flower pots and water coolers, the factory evolved into a hub for high-quality decorative art, including vases and figurines inspired by classical styles. Today, the original factory at Krystalgade 5 operates as Hjorths Fabrik, a "living museum" where visitors can watch pottery being made using 19th-century methods and explore generations of Bornholm ceramic history.

Evolution & Identifying Marks

  • Stoneware Introduction (1902): Under Hans Adolph Hjorth, the factory expanded into stoneware, which often featured a characteristic "silky" finish over a grey-brown clay body.
  • The Deer Logo (1927): A stag/deer was added to the backstamp in 1927, making it a key tool for dating pieces.
  • Markings: Typical marks include "L. Hjorth," "Hjorth Denmark," or "Hjorth Bornholm," often accompanied by a hand-incised shape or model number.”1
