Description

A: A trophy made from silver in the shape of a boat supported at either side by two male figures arising from a spray of water atop a rounded base with four hippocampus sculptures. Inscribed across the front of the base are the words “Inter-Lake Yachting Association Trophy For Unlimited Hydroplanes 40 Feet and Under, Put-In-Bay, Ohio, July 17-21, 1916.”
B: A circular wooden base. On one side is an unengraved oval plaque supported by two mer-babies.

This trophy was awarded in 1916 during a regatta at Put-In-Bay on Lake Erie; the Miss Minneapolis Hydroplane, owned by the Minneapolis Boating Association, won her class by going 66.66 miles per hour. Initially, the trophy was on display at the Minneapolis Athletic Club, but was returned to Ohio in 1951. Jane Mowry, daughter of Minneapolis Boating Association member George Mowry, arranged to have it returned to Minneapolis in 1960.
