Mads Stage is recognized as an esteemed illustrator and artist. He was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1941 until 1947. He is famous for his watercolors of idylic scenes widely photoreproduced. The Houses at Lille Strandstræde are on Nyhavn, a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, a picturesque area since it was gentrified beginning in the 1960s. The original watercolor was painted in 1974.
