This late 20th century print is a detail of the original 1852 painting “Besøg hos bedstefar” or “Visiting Grandfather” by Julius Exner showing a woman and her two daughters in traditional costume. "Et Besøg hos Bedstefaderen" ("A Visit to Grandfather's House") assured Exner a successful career with its wide popularity and many reproductions. He won a Thorvaldsens exhibition medallion for the work, and the painting was purchased for the National Collection.
The authentic folk costumes in the painting are from Hedebo. The child is wearing a Hedebo "puldhue" (crown cap) and a pibekrave neckruff. The mother is wearing a halsklæde (neck kerchief). Her black cap has a red nakkebue (neck bow), a stiffened silk ribbon attached to the back of the cap, which acted as a status symbol of the day.1.
