Description

Conservation employees Roger Syrstad, John Parrish, Melvin Anderson and Arvie Van Meveren load a boat with a 30-gallon drum of Toxaphene to kill off the rough fish that lived in the east branch of the Chippewa river, Scandinavian, Gilchrist and Linka lakes. The job had to be done before the lakes froze over this fall because the killing of the fish had to coincide with the completion of the new dam at Swift Falls. Crews poured 1,200 gallons of a toxicant into the waters. The effects of the toxaphene were readily apparent two days after the first batch was poured into the water as dead fish were evident under the ice. Most of the dead fish will sink to the bottom and decay, eliminating the need for collecting and removing the dead fish. The water will remain toxic for about six months from now, says Francis Ask, Glenwood area fisheries manager. Lab tests in the spring would determine is the water is safe to restock with game fish best suited to the area.
