The Grand Marais School of Outdoor Painting held its first sessions on June 16, 1947. This was to be an eight-week course, a summer branch of the Minneapolis School of Art. The first instructors were Birney Quick,who taught the water color classes and Glen Ranney, who was in charge of gouache and outdoor composition.
