LATE ART COLONY STUDENT REMEMBERED
By Annamarie Cumpston

It was a dusty summer day in 1947 when Irene Thompson, 15, walked five miles to the Shold Coffee Stuga, where she worked for 25 cents an hour.
That day Birney Quick, founder of the Grand Marais Art Colony, came in for his usual cup of coffee and noticed Irene's handmade yellow dress.
"Birney came up to me, said he liked my dress and asked if I would model for the art students at the outdoor painting school," said Thompson. "I was bashful at that age and hesitated until he told me I would get paid $5 an hour."
The summer of 1947 was the first for the Grand Marais Art Colony, now celebrating its 50th Anniversary.
