The Cook County News-Herald (August 26, 1926) outlined the local disaster: About midnight (August 20) townspeople were wakened by the fire alarm and whistles from a tug anchored in the bay. Volunteer firemen fought valiantly, assisted by "three large streams" of water from pumps on the tug, spraying the fire and the adjoining Hicks building.
