Description
The dress is a silk brown striped with green and pink rose patterned dress with linen or cotton partial lined puff sleeves, ruffled bodice, covered buttons, hook and eye fasteners, and snaps at the sleeve bottoms. The dress is hand stitched with a hem bound with decorative binding. Possibly a maternity dress.
The dress was worn by Sophronia Sabrina Garfield around 1860 when living in Minneapolis, MN. She arrived in Minneapolis in 1858 to become principal instructor in Minneapolis' first high school. Sophronia was married to Rev. George Washington Fuller in 4/23/1861. b. 6/19/1827 Tyringham, MA, d. 11/20/1893 Litchfield, MN. Grandfather Isaac Garfield settled in Tyringham in 1739. Distant cousin of President James A. Garfield.
