A crowd estimated at more than 10,000 lined the shoreline Saturday night to watch the colorful Glenwood Waterama pontoon parade and fireworks. A stiff wind that hampered water events all Saturday continued into the night with drivers of pontoons having a difficult time keeping the units in line, although they did an excellent job considering the circumstances. Two of the floats entered in the parade started, but didn't finish the 1.5 mile route. The float sponsored by Ruhr-American and Northern States Power Co. had to drop out shortly after getting started because the outboard motor got wet, while a float sponsored by the Catholic Youth Group dropped out after water shorted out the lights.
First prize of $150 in cash went to the Viking Ship float entered by Glenwoood State Bank and Callaghan Hardware, while second prize of $100 went to Brownie's Tire Service with its Mexican theme and “De-Feet Tire Troubles…Go Goodyear.” Third prize was awarded to the Hawaiian theme float entered by Culligan Soft Water and Rexall Drug. There were 28 units that finished the parade. The Parade Marshal was Charles D. “Chuck” Kettells.
