Description
School house from Pope County School District #33 - Pleasant Hills School. This one-room school was built in 1894 and furnished with desks to fit the various grades (1-8) of the students. Ben Troen recalled the "wood shop" on the basement where boys could build a bird house when they finished their class work. The shop was outfitted with a saw, hammer and drill. The wood burning stove in the front heated the building. Students arrived early in hopes of getting a seat near the stove. The drinking fountain to the left is called a "bubbler". At one time there were 100 school districts in Pope County. The school was moved to the Pope County Fairgrounds after it closed, and later to the museum grounds in 1971. Steve Rosten built a sheet metal model of the school which is in the museum collection, xx.1337.
