Dredging Up Memories: the Dredge William A. Thompson. Produced by the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 1937, the USACE dredge boat, the William A. Thompson, made its maiden voyage up the Mississippi River to its base in Fountain City, Wisconsin. Its charge was to keep the Upper Missippipi River channel clear of sand, silt and other debris. The Thompson would continue this work for the next 70 years.
