Description
Book that contains the New Testament and psalms and songs. At the beginning of the book is "General Preface. An Apology For a New Translation", then other prefaces and information, and information about the various editions. The second half of the book is "Psalms, Hymns, And Spiritual Songs, Original and Selected: Compiled By A. Campbell, W. Scott, B.W. Stone, and J.T. Johnson: Adapted to the Christian Religion. Second Edition. Bethany, VA. Printed by Campbell. MDCCCXXXIV". The book is 2 3/4" long x 4 1/4" high x 1 3/8" deep. Written on the inside front page in dark blue ink is "Israel L. Garrard. Presented by his friend Miss Orr(?). Jan: 1838". Below it in pencil is written "My Dear Mr. Garrard. I think that you ___ so pretty ____ reward you friend(?) Sr T J(?)". On the next page written in pencil at the top is I.L. Garrard. Cincinn Ohio. Stamped in purple ink below it is "GEORGE WOOD GARRARD. FRONTENAC, MINN." Written below that in pencil are the names "Louisa Dudley, Belle Ludlow, Frank Humphrey, Sally O'neal (?) , Caroline Pickett. There is a bracket at the right side of the names and "b___ of Cincinnati". On the back side of the second to last page are pencil drawings of women bonnets and bodices. Written throughout the page in black ink are the initial "M.K.", "C.C.", and "M.J.C.". Written on the side of the page in pencil is "Bethany Church fashions for 1843." The front of the last page has written in black ink on the front half of the page "Jan. 19. 1842. Night is the time to serve the devil, the time to get the reward of evil; Now whil the match holds out to burn Oh hasten Johnson to return." (It is an adaptation of Hymn 73 on page 149). Written in pencil on the bottom half of the same page is "On the night of the 19 of Jan, 1842 Israel Garrard and James Stone exploded the Bomb which has been so much Talked of at Bethany College. Ben Gralne(?), Jim Woods, Jim Spindly Reynolds, J.T. Johnson, Jim Stone, Buchan Richards, and Israel Garrard were the company of Engineers ___". On the inside back cover is a pencil drawing of a knight in armor. Written on the top of the page is "Person/N(W)ore(?)/C_____ter". On the last page right before the begining of the book of Matthew written in pencil is "I.J. Garrard. March 1st 1840." The book belonged to Israel Garrard. He attended Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. The donor purchased the book at an estate sale in south Minneapolis around 1980. In the donor file is a letter written to the donor from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia on April 23, 1976 stating that the library is not aware of any bomb incident on January 19, 1842. Aslo in the donor file is a copy of information about Edward Evertt Hale and rebels against Ralph Waldo Emerson who set off shells on the Harvard campus in 1838.
