Description
This is a 16-4/10X 10-8/10cm sepia photograph titled "Court house." It is a photograph of the Pope County Courthouse in 1876. According to the WPA papers, the county rented space in the Lathrop and Kinney offices located on lot 7, block 24 (the north side of First Ave SE between Franklin and First Street - where the city parking lot is today - between the Village Inn and the Eye Clinic - 2014) The building was used as the courthouse until 1897, later used as a law office, then a feed store. According to Mr. J.G. Whittemore in 1940, this building was used at the courthouse from 1872-1879. In 1880, Dr. Nils S. Holtermann bought the building from Pope County and used it as his home until  1897, and that it burned down in 1905.
Swanson Bakery was located on that site. Pictured are County Attorney, E.M. Webster, Norman Shook, George Rue and Kirk J. Kinney.
