This is a 16-4/10X 10-8/10cm sepia photograph titled "Durkee's Hotel" from 1876. According to J.G. Whittemore in 1940, "Mr. Durkee's Hotel located on Lot 6 Block 19. Built by Kirk J. Kinney in1866, it was used for offices and a store. Upper rooms were rented by County Commissioners and all county business was transacted there from 1866-1872. A note on another copy of the photo claims it was built in 1870 by Judge Lathrop. According to the tax record, the land belonged to Emory S. Lathrop in 1867, E. Lathrop in 1876. Judge Ebenezer Lathrop was the brother of Alfred C. Lathrop. E. Lathrop was the owner of the land in 1870.
According to an ad in the July 12, 1879 Pope County Press, the hotel was run by D.M. Durkey, who also ran a trading post and rooming house near Westport from 1866 to 1882.
