This is a 16-4/10X 10-8/10cm sepia photograph titled " The residence of Dr. Whittemore" from 1876.
According to the WPA papers, the home was built in 1868 on lots 6 & 7 of block 35. (The north side of 4th Avenue SE between Franklin and 1st Streets.) More information on Dr. Whittemore's life and career are available in the family files.
According to J.G. Whittemore in 1940: Dr. Whittemore is on the porch, Gooch in the Kitchen doorway and Mrs. Whittemore and one of the girls are standing in the window. Behind the small fence in the background is Glenwood's first cemetery. The cemetery was moved a number of times.
