Description
This is a 16-4/10 X 10-8/10 cm sepia photograph titled "Residences at Mr. Rue at the Sulphur Springs" from 1876. According to J.G. Whittemore in 1940, "This was Stilman Ayres' home on the hill north of Glenwood Fish Hatchery. The writer remembers this place years ago when the Kaldahl boys ran the town herd of cattle. Pictured are George Rue, Mr. Airs, Elder Lathrop, Mrs. Airs and N.W. Scott." If it was the Rue homestead, it was located in the S.W. 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 3, Minnewaska Township. If it is the Airs homestead, it was located in the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 2, Minnewaska Township. Both homesteads were important sites, close to the Wadsworth and White Bear trails. The Airs homestead was also close to the Red River Ox Cart trail and the land is now the State Fish hatchery. More information available in the WPA papers.
