Description
This is a 16-4/10X 10-8/10cm sepia photograph titled "Wollan Bros. Store and Post Office" from 1876. It shows the main Wollan Brothers / Fremad Association building and a few other buildings on the west side of South Franklin street. The third building in the line has "HOTEL" written on the front. The Fremad Association was located on the corner of Franklin and Green (1st Ave) streets SW. Lot 10 of Block 23 of the original plat of Glenwood. In 1893 this building was moved to the west and a larger building was constructed. The new building was also wooden, but with a brick facade. According to Gustave C. Torguson in the WPA papers, the Wollan brothers bought this trading post from Samuel Johnson in 1870. It was the site of the first trading post in Glenwood. More information on the Wollan Family and the Fremad association is available in the files and the WPA papers. Information in the Wollan files state that the Wollans did not come to Glenwood until 1872 and bought Johnson's hardware store. According to J.G. Whittemore, this is the Wollan Brothers' Store. Later it was organized into the Fremad Association. Pictured are Sam Johnson, Mike Wollan and Casper Wollan. In the upstairs window is Mrs. Casper Wollan. According to the Tax records, in 1872 the north part of this lot belonged to Anderson & Jorgenson and the south part to Johnson & Peterson. In 1874, the north part belonged to Simons & Jorgenson and the south half to Samuel Johnstone. The Wollan Brothers purchased Samuel Johnstone's portion in 1875. Johnstone is often written with the e on the end in the tax records.
