Description
A polished, jet black wedding jug, 12 inches tall by 8 1/2 inches in diameter. This jug has one round base which branches into two slender necks, each ending in an open mouth fluted spout. A half-moon loop connects the two mouths and serves as a handle. The design is a bear paw imprint on each side of the jug. This bear paw held special symbolic significance for the married pair who, by drinking together from the two spouts on this jug, sealed their marriage. The black color of the jug was achieved by spreading animal manure, powdered, on the wood which was to fire the pottery. This jug comes from the Santa Clara Pueblo.
