Jacket: World War II US Women's Naval Reserves (WAVES) Service Dress Blue jacket. The jacket is navy blue wool. The collar has rounded ends with a peaked lapel. On each rounded end of the collar is the WAVES emblem (a white embroidered fouled anchor with a medium blue 3 blade propeller behind it on a navy blue felt circle). There are shoulder pads. There are 4 navy blue plastic closure buttons with the Navy emblem (An eagle standing on a horizontal anchor with cannonballs under the anchor and thirteen stars around the edge of the button.). The buttons are safety pinned on. On each side is a fake breast pocket with a flap. Above the left pocket is a ribbon bar for the World War II Victory Medal. There is a dart from the shoulder to the bottom on each front and back side. On the upper left arm is a rank patch. The patch is navy blue felt in a rectangle shape with a pointed bottom. There is a white embroidered eagle above a red cross. Below are two red v chevrons (Pharmacist's Mate - 2nd Class Petty Officer). The inside of the jacket is lined with navy blue rayon? There is a horizontal slit breast pocket on each side. On the right pocket is a cream label with black "tailored/by" and brown "handmacher". In the center of the label is a large black needle with thread in the center. At the back of the neck is a cream label with blue "ANNA S. SPRICK". Below it is a light purple label. In the center is a black anchor with a white 3 blade propeller behind it. In black at the top is "MADE AND SOLD UNDER/AUTHORITY OF U.S. NAVY" and at the bottom is "U.S. WOMEN'S NAVAL RESERVE". Written in black ink on the right side is "Anna/Sprick". Condition - There are a few light spots down the center back and the back right upper arm. The lining is faded, especially at the upper back. There is lighter discoloration under the arms. There is a hole in the linning at the bottom right and under the right arm. There is a tear under the left arm. Two of the safety pins holding the buttons on were replaced because they were rusting. Worn by Anna Sprick Smith. The uniform was custom-tailored. She served in the US Women's Naval Reserves (WAVES) from June 1943 to November 1945. She trained at the Naval Training Center at Hunter College, New York City and served at the U. S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA with the Hospital Corps. She was a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class (PhM 2/c). (See article "My Life As a Wave" by Anna Sprick Smith in the Today magazine, May 2000). Anna Smith did not reside in Goodhue County at the time of her service.
