Color aerial photograph of Red Wing. View of downtown, Eisenhower Bridge, and He Mni Can - Barn Bluff taken by Joe Manguso of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin.
Hat, Top: Man's black silk top hat. The brim curves up on the sides. Around the brim edges is a black grosgrain ribbon. Around the bottom of the crown is a 1" black grosgrain ribbon that forms a flat bow on the side. The inside brim is lined with black cotton. Around the inside crown is a 2 1/2" black leather band with a pink bow in the back. The inside is lined with blue satin. Imprinted in gold is a possible eagle head between two leaves. Below that is a banner with "FRANK A KAROW & Co" in blue. Below that is a shield with a rectangle and "HATTERS" written in blue in the rectangle. Below that in gold is "298 WEST WATER ST./MILWAUKEE WIS.". The inside leather band is worn. The silk is slightly worn. There is a 3/4" tear in the upper part of the crown in the front. The hat worn by Rev. Christian Bender. He served St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing for 30 years until his death in 1901. He came from Baden, Germany to Red Wing in 1867. He organized German Lutheran congregations in West Florence and at Grace Church, Goodhue Township, and served at churches in Frontenac, Goodhue Township, and Zumbrota at the same time he served St. John's. He preached in the German language.
