Large copper kettle in which clothing and bedding had been packed for the voyage from Norway to America in 1878. This kettle was used to make cheese in Norway and to boil water for laundry. An Ostrem - Hatlei Family newsletter tells the following anecdote: Shortly after leaving for America the SS Sardinian of the Allan Line caught fire in the lower level. Parents Herman Ostrem and Marta and family friend Jens put their son Andrew and infant daughter Gertrude into the kettle and they stayed there until rescued by another boat.Geographic Notes
