Description
Stereoview showing four women sitting on a rocky hillside overlooking a wide, shallow valley. A man with a pair of binoculars sits on a nearby rock. A large group of people stand in the far distance. Horses graze in between. Written on the front is "Whitestone Hill Battlefield. Couteau Hills Dickey County [North Dakota]. Took place in 1863." On reverse is written "Battlefield, White Stone Co. [sic] N. D. about 1910 - gun was picked up here by Mrs. Rice's brother." Whitestone Hill Battlefield was renamed to Whitestone Hill Massacre Site to reflect the true nature of the event that occurred there, that of US Forces massacring Native women, children and elderly encamped there.
