A quilt made with six satin pillow covers from World War II era US Army camps. Three of the pillow covers came from Fort Leonard Wood, MD, one pillow cover came from Camp Polk, Louisiana, one from Yuma, Ariz, and one came from Fort Dix, NJ. With border material, and backing, in navy blue with small white stars, and borders of pink and white and dark red with small pink stars. Features occasional tied white knots. With fourteen attached white plastic hoops across the back top edge for hanging. Original Gammelgarden artifact number H-0753-10.
The pillow covers date from the early 1940's and were sent home by Harry Benshoof to his then sweetheart (and future wife) Myrtle Carlson while he was serving in the US Army during World War II. The quilt was created later by family members.
Pillow shams, or covers, were souvenirs from army camps be sent home by soldiers to their wives, family members and/or sweethearts.
